The Passion Play

Almost 400 years ago the history of the Passion Play began in Oberammergau. The plague raged in many parts of Europe and did not stop at Oberammergau. In order to put an end to the misery, the Oberammergauer decided to take a vow. In 1633 they swore to perform the suffering and death of Christ every ten years, as long as no one died of the plague. The village was heard and so the Oberammergauer played the first Passion Play in 1634. The people of Oberammergau have kept their promise to this day. The 42nd Oberammergau Passion Play had to be postponed due to the covid-19-pandemy. The premiere is now planned for 21st May 2022.

All together
Peter Stückl and David Bender have leading roles in Oberammergau. One is acting in the Passion Play for the 10th time, the other one for the 1st time.
